Femi Fem

Femi Williams (aka Femi Fem) kicked off his career running the Family Funktion/ Shake & Fingerpop warehouse parties in the 1980’s with Norman Jay & Judge Jules. This collective of djs, artists musicians & film makers initiated the rare groove & acid jazz genre with Soul2Soul & Jamiroquai both hailing from the same club scene.

In 1990, he set up the groundbreaking Young Disciples with Marco Nelson featuring Carleen Anderson . This is the band which set the tone for the acid jazz movement in London, incorporating funk, soul, hip hop and breakbeats into their soundscape and placing integrity at the heart of their sound. After chart success including the single Apparently Nothin’ which came from their Mercury Award-nominated Road To Freedom album on Talkin’ Loud Records.

Responding to the demand Femi began writing, producing and re-mixing for a wide range of artists such as Ultra Naté Justin Timberlake, Mary J. Blige, Des’ree, D’Influence, The Pasadenas and Beyoncé. Alongside this work, his public profile as a headline DJ and promoter made his face well known at Cream in Liverpool, Ministry of Sound in London and at London’s Jazz Café playing at events for Prince, Janet Jackson, Stella McCartney, Jade Jagger, Gucci and the Russian Embassy to name but a few. Femi has also produced catwalk show music for fashion designers such as Ozwald Boateng, Katherine Hamnett, Julien MacDonald and Bella Freud.

The best known of Femi’s DJ appearances however, was the regular Friday night slots at his own club nights, MOBO Award-winning, Rotation at London’s Subterranea and Saturday nights at Camouflage, his longstanding 4 floor club in Islington, London. When in town, artists such Goldie, Tricky, Spike Lee, Laurence Fishbourne, Wesley Snipes, Jay Z and Bjork would slip in unannounced to hear the sets and be part of a crowd whose distinction was their diversity and conviviality.

Femi’s DJin’ has also seen him open up to audiences around the world through tours and appearances playing in Australia, Japan, Germany,

Switzerland, Dubai, Hong Kong (where he supported the late Gil Scott Heron), Austria, France, Spain, Ibiza, Ireland, the Czech Republic, New York, and Detroit. A true born collaborator, as musical director & resident for Supperclub in London’s Notting Hill from 2009- 2013, Femi hosted nights and introduced audiences to up and coming DJs and artists, something that he is passionate about and pursues through his mentoring of numerous emerging artists and performers.

Normski

Normski is not a nickname, it’s a brand. Né Norman Anderson is the living impersonation of London’s urban and contemporary culture, and has had a prolific career in the field of music, television, photography, fashion and journalism.

He hosted several youth targeted TV shows for ITV1, Channel 4 (“Celebrity Detox”, “Raw Brittania”, “Board Stupid”), BBC2 (“Dance Energy”), had his slots on BBC Radio One (“Dance Energy Radio Show”), Kiss FM (“Rap Academy”) and BBC Radio 5 (“VIBE”) and stages his urban street culture photography at renowned galleries and exhibitions.

With this high-profile activity he soon became the spokesperson not only of a social fringe group but for a whole generation. Still after all this years on the circuit the phenomenon Normski is one of the key players on the hardest playgrounds in the world, London’s East End, presenting two weekly shows on Hoxton FM.

A father figure to some, a source of inspiration to many, his pre-eminent attitude makes Norman more of a real human being than a self-imposed character. To make a long story short: There are only a few people on this planet as universally gifted as Normski. And this makes it even more exciting for us to have him since 2010, from the very beginning of the IRF, as one of our anchor men and main speakers on our team.

After a one year hiatus the golden cockney tonsils return to our studio and will bless the world with his gospel. All hail Normski!

A Guy Called Gerald

An iconic name in dance music, A Guy Called Gerald stands out for consistent innovation, excellence and refusal to compromise. A Guy Called Gerald kick started Europe’s acid house frenzy releasing the first UK acid house record, the ’88 classic ‘Voodoo Ray’ and ‘Pacific State’ and went on to lay down the blueprint for jungle / drum n bass.

Nine albums and 25 years of independence later, he continues to push the boundaries of electronic dance music touring worldwide bringing his “true school” flavour to a world overloaded with pop pap.

“UK club culture has many people to thank for transforming the imported sound of America into the biggest youth movement my generation has experienced, but nobody else has redefined it so much with the character and soul of Britishness, creating music for both the feet and the head, and indelibly altering our cultural landscape.”

Kelvedon Paint Run

The Kelvedon Bash Paint Run will bring an explosion of colour, fun, laughter and excitement that should not be missed by anyone attending the festival. The 3.5km fun run starts in the main arena field under a cloud of coloured powder paint (non-toxic & easy to wash off). The route takes you out of the fields and through the woods of the estate. At regular intervals, our marshals will be along the route waiting to bombard you with paint. Registration provides you with a white T-Shirt (which works out to be a lovely souvenir of the festival and will also vividly display our paint on you), a couple packets of paint and a finisher’s medal if you’re able to survive the barrage of powder from our marshals and your friends along the route.

This event is not being timed. It’s not about the quickest time, it’s about engaging in an activity with physical/health benefits and having fun at the same time. Get as much powder onto yourself as possible, laugh and enjoy the view (both the scenery and the painted runners) and you are a winner. Registration open to all. Under 18s would need permission from parents. Runners under 12 would have to be accompanied on the route by an adult over 18.

David Rodigan

For over 35 years David Rodigan has been the top dog in the ganja-scented, bass heavy-atmosphere of Britain’s reggae dance-halls. The key to his success has been an unsinkable passion for reggae music, which first took a hold of him as a schoolboy when he heard ska music in the early ’60s. He developed an obsession with the music of Jamaica that generated an encyclopaedic knowledge of the island’s every artist, every song and every rhythm track.

His earliest experience of dee jaying was during lunch breaks once a week in the gym at Gosford Hill School in Kidlington, Oxford. On leaving school he landed a place at the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in 1971, where he spent three years studying to become an actor. He worked extensively in repertory theatre and appeared in a number of television productions such as ‘Doctor Who’ (BBC) and ‘Shackleton’ (BBC); he also performed his one-man show ‘Zima Junction’ at literature festivals and theatres in the 1970s; a dramatisation of the poem by the Russian writer Yevtushenko.

Rodigan began his reggae broadcasting career in 1978 on BBC Radio London. He moved to Capital Radio in 1979 and remained there for eleven years broadcasting his legendary ‘Roots Rockers’ show every Saturday night. His credibility was ensured when he began clashing with Jamaica’s champion DJ, Barry G on JBC Radio in Jamaica. He then went on to clash with all the top Jamaican sound systems in the West Indies, the USA and England.
